PHW meets Johan Vilborg!
It is time to get under the skin on another of the high quality producers out on the market when it comes to progressive house and trance music. Being seen and released through leading labels such as Silk labels, Captured, Unearthed and Dangerbox, we are thrilled and excited to be able to bring you the Swedish ace Johan Vilborg to the PHW house. We are quite sure you are interested in getting to know a bit more about him, let’s hope you will enjoy it as much as we have!
A very warm welcome Johan to PHW, we truly appreciate you taking time for this since we know you are really busy at the moment. Could you give us a little background, who is Johan Vilborg and how did you end up on the EDM scene?
Thanks! I started out 9 years old with my dad’s old turntables! Back then it was all about scratching and just destroying vinyls for the fun of it. I did never do anything special about music really until i turned 13 when i started to play with FL studio. The natural choice was to try making the style i discovered 2 years earlier called Trance and that’s about where it started.
Out of curiosity, quite a lot of us know you from your Feeltz era, now you work only under your real name,Johan Vilborg, any particular reason why it turned the way it has, or you just felt it was time to Johan Vilborg in full flare?
Well Feeltz was some old nickname I had and wanted to change after Paul Van Dyk presented my first release on his Radio Show. I got the need of changing it because I wanted to be recognized as my real name, Johan Vilborg. And with the timing going down to making only progressive was kind of ideal at the same time!
You have been on quite a journey, developed your sound design through the years and things are really moving for you now. You don’t get that far without having the skills and talent of course, what would you say are your biggest strengths as a producer?
I’d say my biggest strength is making that supersaw chord going into good progressions while staying warm. I hope you can agree on that!
For me there is a typical Johan Vilborg sound but that is not important now, how would you describe your music style?
Hard question because it’s so abstract. I’m very addicted to supersaws so that’s one word that kind of describes my whole style. But also i’m keen about how the chords are built, ”where can i put a note which make the chord different”.
You have also recently released another side of your musical skills out, this time through some fantastic chill out vibes, through Silk Sofa. Is this something we will see more of in the future?
Actually these tracks are like 2-3 years old, they where just laying around when the manager of silk noticed them and wanted to release them. They where made under a experimental era i had before i started making Warmer Days and Altara.
When you produce, do you try and work in the same way when building your track or you start of different all the time?
Depends on how I want the end product to be. Lately I’ve been trying to think outside the box because I’ve done a lot of ”almost the same chord use”. So my forthcoming releases, some at Enhanced Recordings you will see that some patterns have been broken!
What would be your first tip to some one that want to start making electronic music or just recently started?
Also a hard one, there are thousands of tips you can give a beginner. But the one I’d say is get passionated. Good work is made with love!
Apart from being a fantastic producer, do you also do the gigs as a DJ and all that?
The few gigs I have I do it all like an ordinary DJ. I always play tracks i totally love and trying to include fresh mash-ups and mixes from the very start of my set.
If we stay on the EDM scene, what producers do you feel are stand out producers that you always check when they have new material out?
Nowdays I actually haven’t got that much time listening on a lot of music, my promo list is usually growing bigger and bigger. I do check my favorites which is on no occasion are releasing on Anjunabeats, Arty, Mat Zo, Audien and so on.
What can we expect from Johan Vilborg in the digital stores the coming months, have you got some ?
I have a lot of tracks coming up. Some originals and also I’ve been quite handy with collaborating with other artists like Adam Szabo, Estiva and Mike Shiver wich you’ll see the coming months.
It is time to round things off for this time, any final words you want to say to your fans through our PHW website?
Well i just want to thank you all for the nice views and comments on the number of tracks I’ve released so far.
Thanks for taking part Johan, it’s a pleasure having you around us!
