Interview with Andrew Benson
Hello everybody it’s once again time for us at PHW to seek out another favorable talent in the progressive house community and pick their brain a bit on music and life. This time around we have set our tractor beams on Russian producer Andrey Malookov…better known in the progressive house community as Andrew Benson. Let’s take a few minutes to see what this talented producer has planned for the future.
PHW: Hello there Andrew, first off let us thank you for doing this interview with us, we are huge fans of your work here at PHW.
Andrew: Hello, friends! First of all, thank you for this opportunity. It’s my first interview and I’m surprised. Great to see that I have listeners J
I am a huge fan of PHW and it’s a big pleasure for me.
PHW: So where does the story of Andrew Benson start in music, what were your main inspirations in the beginning and what drove you to be a producer of progressive house?
Andrew: It all started not long ago, I’ve produced music for around 3 years now. I was bored, and it was the key point in the beginning of my musical story. I never really had any plans or goals really, the dreams that I did have were obviously naïve for the most part. However It was interesting to me to hear this music and I always thought to myself “How they make these sounds? It’s cool, why I can’t try?”
For now – my music is my life; I have a lot of ambitions!! As for progressive house I love it but it is not the only music I like to produce, it can be ambient, techno or even a bit trancey.
PHW: What made you decide to choose the name “Andrew Benson” as your production title? What relevance does this title hold for you?
Andrew: It sounded cool, elegant and strong ; and i love England and their culture.
When I chose this name I didn’t have internet and of course it was hard to use Google, because Andrew Benson is a popular name =)
PHW: How would you describe your sound to someone? Is there anything that you particularly draw inspiration from for your music?
Andrew: It’s like Love – feel which can not be explained… I try to draw my emotions, so, if I see first snow, I write about it. If I see aliens, I create dark progressive. I just want to make art, maybe my music will be loved by some people and that in turn will make me happier..but hopefully that will happen on a massive scale.
PHW: What do you use for production as far as software? Do you use any hardware? Are there any specific plug-ins or interfaces that you particularly like or tend to use?
Andrew: Sequencer: Cubase 5.
VSTi: Waldorf Largo 2.1.
VST: Lot of standard Cubase plugins, TS Native Bundle and iZotope collection.
I have AKG K77 Headphones and Digidesign Mbox Mini audio-interface (New monitors coming this Fall)
PHW: Give us a quick idea of what you do when creating a new track. What are the processes you take and in what order do you usually work when finding new ideas and inspiration?
Andrew: I don’t have one template for all tracks and remixes. If you want to find your exclusive style, try new and after – try something new again and again. For me it’s the art, the idea that you can create different music, lot of unusual synths.
My work can start from other parts : chords, melody, drums, atmo or bass.
PHW: So please tell us a little about you, what is a day in the life of Andrey Malookov like? Do you have any favorite sports or hobbies you like to play?
Andrew: Oh, great question! I love my life and each day is great! I work on my family company and everyday I manage some business and trying to equip our place together with my father! I play tennis for 10 years. Also I have been a big fan of Manchester United for about 16 years now.
Of course I think about my music and now i build my sound studio. Hopefully on one beautiful day the PHW team will come to see my new music studio.
PHW: If you had to choose 5 different Labels that you admire and respect the most, who would they be?
2. Balance Series
3. Hope Recordings
4. Vapour Recordings
PHW: If you had to choose 5 producers who you admire and respect who would they be?
1. Eelke Kleijn
3. Kasey Talor
PHW: What are the Top 5 tracks that you are listening to and enjoying the most?

2. Mike Foyle – Shipwrecked (Original Chillout mix)
3. Lovebirds feat. Stee Downes – Want You In My Soul
4. John Tejada – The End Of It All

PHW: Many people believe that the ability to DJ as well as produce is a necessity in the music industry these days. Have you learned to DJ already or are you looking to start to DJ in the future?
Andrew: Producers who want to be famous in the dance scene need this. It’s a necessary part of the music industry, I agree with you. Of course I learned to DJ, but I didn’t feel so much rush and happiness with DJ mixes like I did with producing. Maybe in future I could, because I want to have great skills in all parts of EDM.
PHW: If you were given a glimpse into the future, where would you see yourself? What accomplishments would you like to see fulfilled if given this glimpse of your future?
Andrew: You know I ask myself this question almost every day. First of all – I want to always be with family and friends. Of course in future I see myself as one of the best music producers, with tons of fans. I want to see smiles and happiness when my music plays! Achievements…3 key words : Health, Happiness and Art!
PHW: Well that about wraps things up here, we truly appreciate your time in completing this interview with us. Are there any final words you would like to say to all of the fans at PHW?
Andrew: PHW is best guide in beautiful music and I hope this site will be famous around the Universe! People must know about true progressive house!
